Casserole Cook-Off Event
Bethlehem Lutheran Raises Money for Building Project with Casserole Cook-Off
People lined up to get into West Elementary on Sunday night to sample a variety of casseroles that were featured at the Casserole Cook-Off sponsored by the Bethlehem Lutheran Legacy Committee. Over 200 tickets were sold for this unique event that featured 15 different casseroles and decorations to compliment the casserole. The team of judges were Gary Halverson, Slater Mayor, Jeff Meyer, Slater Librarian and John Carlson, Des Moines Register Columnist. The judges awarded prizes on taste and originality of the recipe and overall presentation. There was also a People’s Choice Award presented, whereas people that attended could cast a vote.
Over $2000 was raised at the event and a $30,000 pledge was also received. Homemade desserts and refreshments were also provided to make the evening meal complete and all attendees received a booklet with all the casserole recipes.
“Not only was this a great event for our fundraising efforts but it was also a good community event and we were very pleased to see the number of folks that came from all the surrounding communities. It was really a lot of fun and just a very nice evening for everyone,” said Barb Mallon, member of the fundraising committee.
Bethlehem Lutheran kicked off a fundraising campaign in July 2007 to raise money for an addition to their church home. Through a variety of efforts, the committee has raised over $400,000. The committee is planning some other unique community wide events as well and thanks everyone from the cooking teams to the judges to the people that attended for making the event such a great success.
